The intersection of motor learning and athletic development is an area ripe with opportunity for enhancing athletic performance and fitness levels. Motor learning, a fundamental process in acquiring and refining skills, plays a pivotal role in athletic training by enabling athletes to perform complex movements with increased efficiency and effectiveness.
Motor Learning for Athletic Development
- Optimizes Movement Efficiency: Motor learning facilitates the development of more efficient motor patterns, reducing energy expenditure for a given task. Coh, Jovanović-Golubović, & Bratić (2004) describe motor learning as a process that encompasses acquiring, completing, and utilizing motor information and programs, crucial for performing movements optimally in sports (Coh, Jovanović-Golubović, & Bratić, 2004).
- Enhances Adaptability and Flexibility: According to Pesce et al. (2016), variability of practice, a key component of motor learning, enhances cognitive and executive function development.
